Thom Van Ourkerk – Keyboard, Sax, Flute, Vocals, Cowbell and other percussion
What could be more fun than playing in a rock & roll band!
Thom started his rock career as a drummer in high school and pounded out rock & roll to gymnasiums full of hormonally charged teenagers. A couple hundred garage bands later, he got his first professional gig – on the road with a lounge band.
After realizing that playing casinos ended up eating the profits, he landed in San Diego where he drummed for a number of local bands including The Strangers, and Thunderbolt the Wondercolt. Equipped with an “I can do that” attitude, Thom picked up the piano and started playing with The Midnight Gamblers, winning the CCMA New Country band of the year award in 1999. He’s played with so many bands with so many strange names including The Fabulous Blowpucks, that his time with The Tim Flannery Band seems tame.
Adding sax, flute and clarinet to his arsenal of instruments, Thom joined the original Catillacs almost 20 years ago. After retiring from a career in video production, music became his obsession and in addition to The New Catillacs, he keeps busy with a couple of 20-piece jazz bands playing swing and old standards. Not bad for a drummer.
Bass and Vocals
When we asked for a Bass player who could sing, we hit gold!
A life-long musician and performer, Shaaron’s gritty rock ‘n roll vocals, killer bass lines and all-star experience on stage and in the studio add up to far more than just one player.
Right out of high school Shaaron toured with her all girl band, The Spider’s Web, as the lead guitarist. She did several years of USO shows, Princess Cruises and casinos and played the part of Janis Joplin in A Tribute To Janis. Shaaron founded Koko Loco, a San Diego event band playing classic rock, Trop Rock, and did a Jimmy Buffett tribute – which led to opening for (and singing with!) Jimmy Buffett. Shaaron spent several years as bassist and vocalist with The Tim Flannery Band, and recorded their first two CDs.
Shaaron and Thom, our keyboard/sax man, played together many moons ago, in Buffed Out (with Tim Flannery) and a band called Chess Set, so The New Catillacs is a reunion of sorts.
Guitar and Vocals
We are so glad Andy has more hours in his day than most people!
What a gift to the New Catillacs…an accomplished musician who brings his energy, sense of fun and endless abilities to the group.
We are lucky to have him, because you can find Andy playing pretty much any day of the week with groups like the Stand Up Guys and Stars on the Water, as well as filling in for other bands who need someone to play guitar, bass or drums. He and our bass player Shaaron have formed a trio that plays the Galley on Wednesday nights with the drummer from the Association – Bruce Pictor.
Keeping the band on tempo and adding a whole lot of personality and talent to the mix.
Drummers can’t be beat – especially when they are multi-talented. Bruce Pictor comes to the New Catillacs from his decades association with The Association! Bruce has also been on tour with Gary Puckett & The Union Gap.
Not only is he a great drummer, he adds another layer of vocals to our sound. And top off all this talent with a sparkling smile and sense of humor and it is clear that The New Catillacs are lucky he said yes!
